Twitter in Classroom

Twitter is a great communication tool that I use inside and outside classroom. I use the "follow" function to connected with educators around the world. Through their status updates, I know what is happening in their classrooms, conference updates.. etc. We also help each other with problem solving as well as share our resources.

Twitter looks like this

RT (Retweet): re-telling someone else's tweet

@username: open message to specific person

#Hashtag: to group & track discussion (often used for conference, seminar, classroom activity... etc)

I also use Twitter inside classroom, to share ideas, gather students' response. The next coming up project will be for our Year 6 students to Tweet during their Taipei visit in November. The ideas is to have students in Taipei keep their status updates- where they are, what they see, what they are doing and share with our students, teachers and parents in Hong Kong.

  1. Thanks a lot for this, I tend to avoid mass social trends like twitter because of my personal anti-ego ego, but you've shown me how it can be a useful collaboration tool. Thanks!

  2. I would add one idea. The students could review their posts after the trip. The posts could be reviewed with different lenses: an English teacher could work with the language used. A math teacher might try to make use of the information tweeted in another way.

I am very curious to know which mobile device the young people are using to tweet? Do they young ones or the teachers get lessons or training on how to type on a mobile device?

  3. Twitter also has the function to add photos and geolocation, which is GPS like. Our students use Ipod Touches to tweet, there is mini touch screen keyboard or can use hand writing recognition.

  4. great demonstration, i like the retweet function to share the thoughts easily! #Hashtag is a good tool as well. However, I am considering the cost of using mobile (like HTM IPOD OR 3G CELL PHONES)for school which have limited budget, those may not be affordable to buy 20-30 machines for students (even 5 in a group and share 1 machine)
