ActiVote in Classroom

Helen Douglas, a Year 1 teacher at Chinese International School has been using ActiVote in her classroom to receive real time data to help with her students' learning.

ActiVote is an individual voting system that runs with Promethean Interactive Whiteboard. It runs off USB hub, plug and then play.

When the data is received, there are options to view them in pie charts, bar graphs, as well as graph of class and individual data. Real time and easily accessible data provide the advantage of making immediate broad statements and get general overview rapidly.

Helen also used ActiVote for both formative assessment and summative assessment. She gives diagnostic data to determine where she needs to go next for students own planning. This also gives her students ownership of learning and direction for herself, as a teacher's planning.

Helen also found ActiVote is great for receiving instant feedback from students.  Students' opinions are valuded, and listened to, so that students have clear picture of what others thought quickly (without raising hands, etc) By doing so, students set their next goal or target for improvement. As for teachers, the data give indicators of what student body think and how they learn to reflect on their own practice and accept criticism.

Advantage:
1. graphs easy to see popular choice or not
2. engagement
3. quick set up, quick uptake on how to work device
4. can set goals
5. can see what needs to be learnt, informs teaching, chn part of planning process
6. uses data - direct info, more belief in data

Btw immediate responses can really foster students' learning interest as they can receive feedback and they can also get a sense of participation.
